Don't Panic
****CISPA ALERT***
EXTERMINATE EXTERMINATE EXTERMINATE!!! Please read this
I am declaring a state of emergency for all residents of the United States of America. CISPA is attempting to sneak into our private internet lives. Today the House of Representatives pushed the bill through in a huge rush and it is now on its way to the senate. We can not let a bill like this spit on the ideas of the American system of Rights. It’s enough that we let corporations forcefeed us bullshit and lies on a daily basis but we must draw the line here. CISPA is similar to previous bills that have been shot down by the American public such as SOPA. President Obama has threatened to veto this bill but I don’t even want to see it make it to that stage. We need to act now. Call your local representatives today and inform them that this bill is a direct violation of your rights. You can contact them by clicking here.

10 Big Companies That Pay No Taxes (and Their Favorite Politicians)

Between 2008 and 2011, 26 major American corporations paid no net federal income taxes despite bringing in billions in profits, according to a new report (PDF) from the nonprofit research group Citizens for Tax Justice. CTJ calculates that if the companies had paid the full 35 percent corporate tax rate, they would have put more than $78 billion into government coffers.
Here’s a look at the 10 most profitable tax evaders and the politicians their CEOs, employees, and PACs give the most money to.

Can we put up some facts?
As you can plainly see, the military budget is FAR surpassed by “social priorities.”  So far in terms of 2.14 TRILLION dollars vs. 553 BILLION dollars for the military.  Nearly a 4-1 ratio.  Obviously people can manipulate the data all they want, but at least try to include some facts.
-dead-on-arrivai
1) You mean nearly a 3-1 ratio, or more than 1/4 of the spending is for the military.
2) The chart is clearly labeled as the Discretionary Spending Budget, for which these statistics are indeed fact. However, your point about this chart lacking in some proper context is well taken. Below, is reproduced the full measure of Mandatory and Discretionary Spending, with their percent change.
Notable to me is the Interest on National Debt, which costs us more than the combined spending for the Department of Homeland Security, Department of Energy, Department of Justice, Department of Agriculture, National Aeronautics and Space Administration, Department of Transportation, Department of the Treasury, Department of the Interior, Department of Labor, Department of Commerce, Army Corps of Engineers, Environmental Protection Agency, National Science Foundation, Small Business Administration, and Corporation for National and Community Service.
Also notable, the -14.0% change in spending for Unemployment/Welfare/Other mandatory spending during an unemployment crisis.

You need to read this infographic regarding the Internet Blacklist Bill. There is a lot of internet regulation/privacy talks occurring in the Government right now and it’s a dark and scary time for us all. More than ever people should be making themselves familiar with the bills that have and possibly will be passed in the near future. Remember friends, if a bills passed in the White House and nobodies there to see it, the bill is still passed. Make it a point this week to do some e-search regarding these policies so that you can help to protect the sanctity of the interwebs. Remember kids, only you can prevent firewalls.

: Forgive the Debt of The 99 Percent ?

realcleverscience:

akindofterminus:

“So my immodest proposal is simply this,” as posed by Alex Pareene :

Individuals and households in the bottom 99 percent who owe debt to any large financial institution that received federal government support during and after the 2008 crisis should see their debt forgiven. That would certainly stimulate the economy, as most people would suddenly find themselves with a great deal more money to spend on iPads (and food, and clothing, and housing, and healthcare). The debt can be forgiven by decree or if the government really wants to it can step in to pay it itself; I don’t much care either way. (Though it’d be nice to see it just wiped off the books, to enrage the banks.)

Let’s wipe the debt of the 99 percent off the books, tell the financial sector to eat it, and get on with our lives.

I’m by no means the first person to come up with this demand. David Graeber, author of “Debt: The First 5,000 Years,” proposed the idea on “Democracy Now” last month.

I’m not endorsing this, but I’m going to try and make proposed solutions more public. As I’ve said a lot lately, I think it’s time to start proposing and considering solutions for the problems. That means putting out ideas, even if at first glance they seem a bit outlandish. It gets the flow started, which is something we really need.

The execution of Troy Davis really irked me. If you haven’t kept up with it, give it a couple minutes of your time. The United States has executed yet another man who may very well have been innocent, and I can’t help but feel embarrassment & sorrow. Too many people have been found innocent after being put to death for me to be ok with capitol punishment. It’s tragic to say the least.
I wanted to see what other countries still participate in this shameful act, only to find we are in the company of some unsavory places. In case you geography skills are as poor as mine, the countries marked in red include: China, Iran, North Korea, Pakistan, Cuba, Libya, Somalia, Afghanistan, Iraq, & Syria, among others.
Only one country in all of Europe practices it and that is Belarus.  -sirmitchell
